Jharkhand (HRNW)- In India, a drug smuggling case took an unusual turn when the court was informed that a large quantity of seized cannabis was allegedly eaten by rats in a warehouse.
According to Indian media reports, the case was registered in the state of Jharkhand, where police claimed in 2022 that they had stopped a vehicle on a national highway and recovered a large quantity of cannabis hidden inside. The seized drugs reportedly weighed around 200 kilograms, with an estimated value of several million rupees.
During court proceedings, police officials stated that the cannabis had been stored in a warehouse, where it was allegedly eaten by rats, making it impossible to present the evidence.
The court rejected this explanation, stating that convicting someone without evidence is against the law. The judge emphasized that the responsibility for failing to secure such a large quantity of drugs rests with the relevant authorities, and subsequently, the accused was acquitted.
Following the verdict, the Indian police have faced intense criticism, and experts have described the incident as a serious concern for law enforcement agencies.
