Lahore (HRNW)- Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has announced a nationwide strike for September 3, saying the party’s protest movement will continue until the government provides relief to the public.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem said sit-ins and protest camps are underway in Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi and Hyderabad, while rallies are also planned in Faisalabad and Rawalpindi. He said a decision on the timing of a possible long march toward Islamabad would be taken after consultations.
The JI chief demanded the withdrawal of additional taxes, including the petroleum levy, and an end to electricity load-shedding. He questioned why load-shedding continues despite the country’s electricity-generation capacity and criticized what he described as excessive privileges enjoyed by the elite.
Hafiz Naeem also criticized the federal and provincial governments and alleged that political leaders and the bureaucracy were failing to address public concerns. He said committees had been formed to organize the September 3 strike and that the party would engage with the business community and industrialists to make it successful.
