Islamabad (HRNW)- Electricity consumers may face an additional financial burden of Rs36.54 billion in September if the proposed increase of Rs2.52 per unit under the July fuel price adjustment is approved.
According to sources, the power regulator has reserved its decision on the proposal submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which sought an increase based on electricity generation costs incurred in July.
During the hearing, the estimated additional burden was initially placed at around Rs41 billion, including GST. Following regulatory review, the additional fuel adjustment amount was revised to Rs36.54 billion.
According to the data, 10.78 percent of electricity was generated from imported LNG in July at a cost of around Rs47.37 per unit, while 1.42 percent came from furnace oil at approximately Rs50.7 per unit. About 31 million units were also generated using diesel at a cost of Rs54.47 per unit.
Meanwhile, hydropower accounted for 39.81 percent of total generation, local coal 10.91 percent, imported coal 14.38 percent and nuclear power 10.10 percent. The cost of nuclear-generated electricity was reported at around Rs3.20 per unit.
If approved, the proposed Rs2.52-per-unit increase will be reflected in September electricity bills, placing another significant burden on consumers already struggling with inflation and high power costs.
