Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on certain imported drones and related components as part of efforts to reduce US dependence on China and strengthen the domestic drone industry.
According to US officials, the decision was taken on national security grounds. A statement issued by the White House said that a 100% duty would apply to certain unmanned aircraft and drone systems.
The affected drones include unmanned aerial systems weighing more than 25 kilograms at takeoff, as well as drones equipped with sensitive national security-related capabilities, including thermal imaging systems and drone docking stations.
According to the US administration, the higher tariffs are intended to reduce national security risks and limit dependence on foreign countries for critical drone technology and components.
A 25% tariff will also be imposed on smaller drones, meaning the duties on imported drones will vary according to their size, weight and technical capabilities.
Chinese companies currently hold a significant position in the US drone market, prompting Washington to pursue policies aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese products and technology in the sector.
The Trump administration maintains that drones and related technologies have become increasingly important to national security and that strengthening domestic production and supply chains is therefore necessary.
The new tariffs could increase the prices of some imported drones in the United States while encouraging American manufacturers to expand domestic production of drones and related components.
