Cairo (HRNW) — Egyptian authorities have reportedly uncovered the alleged use of black vegetable carbon as a substitute for cocoa in biscuits being produced under the name “Oreo” at an unlicensed factory.
According to local authorities, a raid on the unlicensed facility resulted in the seizure of 50 cartons of biscuits carrying the “Oreo” name, along with a large quantity of suspected raw materials.
Authorities said initial findings raised suspicions that black vegetable carbon was being used instead of cocoa in the production process. However, the exact composition of the products and raw materials will require confirmation through laboratory testing and further investigation.
The factory was sealed following the operation, while the seized biscuits and raw materials were taken into custody for further legal proceedings.
Further investigations into the alleged food-safety violations are underway.
