Body of Indian Marine Engineer Recovered After Merchant Ship Attack Off Oman Coast

Muscat (HRNW)- The body of an Indian marine engineer who went missing after a merchant ship was attacked off the coast of Oman has been recovered, the Indian Maritime Workers’ Union confirmed, expressing condolences to the victim’s family.

According to AFP, 30-year-old Hiram Karmarkar, a resident of Pune, India, was serving as a marine engineer aboard the Cyprus-flagged merchant vessel GFS Galaxy.

Reports said Hiram Karmarkar went missing following the attack on the ship off the Omani coast on Sunday, prompting rescue operations to locate him.

Manoj Yadav, an official of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, said the company operating the vessel informed the union on Tuesday evening that the Omani Coast Guard had recovered Karmarkar’s body.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the full nature of the attack, identified those responsible, or released complete details of the incident. Investigations are ongoing.

Recent tensions in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz have heightened concerns over the safety of commercial shipping, with the global maritime industry closely monitoring developments.

Analysts say the continuing instability in the region poses risks to international shipping, global energy supplies, and worldwide trade.
