Muzaffarabad (HRNW)- Barrister Iftikhar Gilani of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) has been elected as the 17th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, securing 30 votes in the Legislative Assembly.
PPP candidate Sardar Mukhtar Khan received 14 votes during the election. The AJK Legislative Assembly has 32 PML-N members, while elections on seven seats are yet to be completed.
Iftikhar Gilani previously served as Education Minister and was first elected to the AJK Legislative Assembly in 2011. He entered the current assembly after winning a technocrat seat on a PML-N ticket.
The PML-N leadership had approved his nomination during a key consultative meeting attended by senior party leaders, including Rana Sanaullah, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Shah Ghulam Qadir and Raja Farooq Haider. Newly elected Speaker Chaudhry Tariq Farooq and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Raza Qadri also expressed their support for Gilani.
