Washington, D.C. / The Hague (HRNW) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the United States will work with its available resources and allies to take measures aimed at limiting the role and influence of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to Rubio, the U.S. government will not allow foreign governments or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to override the U.S. Constitution or its judicial system. He stated that the administration intends to coordinate with its allies in pursuing this policy.
The statement comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants related to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in connection with allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The ICC’s legal proceedings concerning these allegations remain part of an ongoing international judicial process.
Human Rights Perspective
Human Rights News Worldwide (HRNW) emphasizes that international accountability, the rule of law, and access to justice for victims of serious international crimes are fundamental principles of the global human rights framework.
States hold differing legal and political positions regarding the jurisdiction and authority of international judicial institutions. Nevertheless, international human rights standards support the principle that allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other grave violations should be examined through independent, impartial, and transparent legal processes, while ensuring that all parties are afforded due process and the right to a fair defence.
Respect for international law, judicial independence, and accountability mechanisms remains essential to strengthening public confidence in global justice institutions and protecting the rights of victims.
