Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Passes Away

Doha (HRNW)- Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, has passed away. He served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily transferring power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During his tenure, Sheikh Hamad transformed Qatar into a key player in international diplomacy and significantly expanded the country’s political and diplomatic influence on the global stage. When handing over power, he stated that the time had come for a new generation to lead the nation. Sheikh Tamim was 33 years old when he assumed the role of Emir.

Under Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, Qatar became one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), strengthening its global economic position. It was also during his reign that Qatar secured the right to host the FIFA Football World Cup, marking a historic milestone for the country.
