Karachi (HRNW): Implementation of laws designed to protect Karachi’s historic heritage has once again come under scrutiny in the historic Harchand Rai Vishandas Quarters on Nishter Road.
According to sources and local residents, heritage buildings and historic structures located in Alana Masjid Wali Gali are allegedly being damaged or demolished, with commercial shops reportedly being constructed in their place without proper authorization.
Residents have particularly raised concerns over Heritage Plot Nos. 56 and 80, where construction activities are allegedly taking place. According to local residents, the nature of these constructions is inconsistent with the original character of the historic structures and the spirit of heritage protection laws.
Residents claim that they have repeatedly lodged complaints with the relevant authorities against the alleged illegal construction. However, they allege that despite these complaints, construction activities have continued and have reportedly accelerated.
The residents have demanded that the relevant heritage and municipal authorities take immediate notice and conduct an on-site inspection. They have also called for a review of the official records, approved building plans and legal status of the construction at both plots.
They further demanded that if the construction is found to be in violation of heritage laws or approved plans, those responsible should face action in accordance with the law, while the historic structures must be protected from further damage.
