South Lebanon: Tensions Escalate Despite Ceasefire; Over 2,500 Casualties Reported

SOUTH LEBANON (HRNW): Despite the implementation of a ceasefire agreement, the situation in South Lebanon remains extremely volatile. Reports indicate continued military operations by Israeli forces targeting multiple residential and strategic areas.

Airstrikes were reportedly carried out at the entrances of the town of Kafra, near Bint Jbeil. Additionally, a drone strike in the Qaliyeh area of Tyre District resulted in the martyrdom of one civilian and left several others wounded.


Casualties and Humanitarian Impact:

According to the latest figures from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, the scale of human loss since the escalation on March 2, 2026, has been catastrophic:

  • Total Fatalities: More than 2,500 people have been killed in Israeli strikes.

  • Total Injuries: Over 7,800 individuals have sustained injuries.

  • Vulnerable Groups: The toll includes at least 277 women, 177 children, and approximately 100 medical and health workers.

Military Claims and Counter-Actions:

  • Israeli Claims: The Israeli military asserts that it has targeted over 50 Hezbollah sites in recent days, characterizing the strikes as “Operation Eternal Darkness” aimed at dismantling militant infrastructure.

  • Hezbollah’s Response: Reports indicate that Hezbollah has launched retaliatory drone strikes targeting Israeli military personnel during withdrawal operations. These counter-attacks have reportedly caused panic and further casualties among the ranks.

The ongoing violations of the truce have created a highly sensitive environment, with international observers warning of a deepening humanitarian crisis as the number of displaced persons in Lebanon exceeds 1.2 million.
