Islamabad (HRNW)- A heated debate over the PIMS Hospital nursery tragedy took place in the Senate, with lawmakers demanding accountability and a thorough investigation into the deaths of newborn children.
The Senate suspended routine proceedings to discuss the incident, while Senator Sherry Rehman moved a resolution calling for the formation of a House Committee to investigate the tragedy. The resolution was subsequently passed by the House.
Senator Ali Zafar demanded a comprehensive inquiry and proposed a committee with equal representation from the government and opposition. Other lawmakers called for a judicial commission, improved emergency procedures and stronger fire-safety measures at PIMS.
Several senators criticized the hospital administration and questioned the emergency response, staffing and safety arrangements. Heated exchanges also took place between government and opposition members during the debate.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal described the incident as a tragedy and said he had presented himself for accountability. He supported the formation of an investigative committee and assured the Senate that those responsible would not be spared.
The Senate resolution is aimed at ensuring a detailed investigation into the PIMS tragedy and determining responsibility for any negligence or failures that contributed to the incident.
