Kathmandu (HRNW)- Flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border have caused widespread destruction, with the death toll reportedly rising above 350 and hundreds of tourists still missing, including more than 100 Indian nationals and 12 British nationals.
CCTV footage from Tibet showed a powerful surge of water and mud striking buildings near the border crossing, while images from Nepal showed people fleeing to safety after the sudden floods.
Nepal’s foreign minister expressed concern that an earthquake followed by an avalanche may have contributed to the disaster, although investigations are continuing to determine the exact cause.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has personally directed authorities to accelerate rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. Officials face major challenges reaching remote locations because of mountainous terrain, severe weather and flooding.
The disaster is being described as Nepal’s worst since the devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed around 9,000 people. Rescue teams continue searching for missing tourists and other victims, while authorities fear the death toll could rise further.
