Food Authority Cannot Seal Stores, Only Initiate Legal Action, Lahore High Court Observes

Lahore (HRNW) – The Lahore High Court has observed that the Punjab Food Authority’s powers are limited to initiating legal proceedings and do not extend to sealing business premises, while hearing a petition challenging the sealing of a grocery store.

During the proceedings, the court remarked that, at first glance, the Food Authority appeared to have exceeded its legal authority by sealing the store. The court directed the concerned officials to immediately de-seal the premises, warning that if the order was not complied with, the court would pass an appropriate judicial order.

In response, the Punjab Food Authority submitted a report stating that inspections at the grocery store had uncovered substandard and expired food products, including poor-quality turmeric and chili powder. According to the authority, legal proceedings were initiated and a case was registered based on these findings.

After hearing arguments from both parties, the Lahore High Court reserved its judgment on the petition. The final verdict is expected to clarify the legal scope of the Punjab Food Authority’s enforcement powers concerning business premises.

Legal experts believe the case could establish an important judicial precedent regarding the limits of regulatory authorities’ powers, business owners’ legal rights, and the enforcement of food safety laws in Punjab.
