Karachi Faces Up to 18-Hour Load Shedding Amid Heatwave; Citizens Decry K-Electric’s Claims and Excuses

Karachi (HRNW)- Despite the worst load shedding of up to 18 hours, K-Electric continues to be bold. It claims that 70 percent of the city is exempt from load shedding.

Despite the intense heat, announced and unannounced load shedding continues in different areas of Karachi, where power shutdowns for several hours in the name of technical malfunction have become the norm, while load shedding is also being done as usual despite power shutdowns in the name of malfunction.

The duration of power shutdown in different areas of the city has reached 18 hours, including Old City Area, Maripur, Lines Area, Surjani, Model Colony, Malir, Landhi, Korangi, Allahwala Town, Orangi Town, New Karachi, North Karachi, City Railway Colony, Jamia Cloth, Jamshed Quarters, Jahangir Road, Liaquatabad and other areas.

Citizens say that they pay their bills regularly but despite this, there is no electricity for hours. In extreme heat, power outages in the name of malfunction and then load shedding are routine, which is extremely distressing.

According to citizens, power outages for 12 hours every week in the name of maintenance work have also become a norm during extreme heat, while despite maintenance, regular load shedding is also done, which is causing great distress.

On the other hand, a spokesperson for K-Electric says that electricity is provided to feeders on which bills are fully paid and it is not possible to provide free electricity to anyone in the city.

The spokesperson said that the tariff for electricity consumers is the same throughout Pakistan, Karachi consumers pay the same price as in other cities.
