Karachi (HRNW)- A fire safety report covering 22 government hospitals across Sindh has revealed serious shortcomings in fire prevention, emergency response and safe evacuation systems, raising concerns about the safety of patients and hospital staff.
According to the report, several major hospitals lack basic safety measures, including fire alarms and water sprinkler systems. Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Hospital have functional fire extinguishers but lack fire alarms and sprinklers, while electrical wiring at both hospitals requires repairs.
The report also identified significant deficiencies at NICH, Lyari General Hospital, Qatar Hospital, Saudabad Hospital and several other institutions, including faulty or insufficient fire extinguishers, inadequate emergency exits, poor electrical wiring and irregular fire drills.
However, fire safety arrangements at SMBB Trauma Center and Korangi Children’s Institute were described as satisfactory, while some other institutions were assessed as having relatively better arrangements. Fire safety data for several hospitals, including NICVD, SIUT and other institutions, was reported as incomplete.
The findings indicate that many government hospitals in Sindh are failing to meet basic fire safety requirements, potentially increasing the risk of casualties and damage during emergencies.
