Wildfire Rages Through Iran’s Hyrcanian Forests — Tehran Appeals for International Assistance

Tehran (HRNW) A massive wildfire has broken out in Iran’s Elit Chalous Forest, threatening parts of the Hyrcanian Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prompting Tehran to issue an urgent appeal for international help to save this ancient natural treasure.

According to reports, special firefighting aircraft from Turkey have already arrived in Marzanabad, while Russia, Belarus, and Azerbaijan have also expressed readiness to assist in firefighting operations.

The wildfire began 20 days ago in the Hyrcanian Forests, which stretch nearly 1,000 kilometers along the Caspian Sea coast. Although initial containment efforts succeeded, changing weather conditions reignited the flames.

Local sources report that around 40 hectares of forest have been affected so far, though independent verification remains pending.

The Hyrcanian Forests, shared between Iran and Azerbaijan, are estimated to be 25–50 million years old and are recognized globally for their unique biodiversity and ecological importance.

Iranian authorities have called on the global community and environmental organizations to provide immediate aid and technical support to contain the fire and protect this irreplaceable natural heritage.
