Washington (HRNW)- The Wall Street Journal has reported that the United States has decided to maintain the deployment of some of its military forces in the Middle East until 2027.
According to the report, US Secretary of Defense Pat Hegseth has ordered the continued deployment of certain American forces in the region. Around 50,000 US troops are currently present or on alert across the Middle East, including air defense units, warplanes, naval vessels and other military forces.
The deployment of some personnel from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division has also reportedly been extended until 2027.
Some senior US military commanders have reportedly raised internal concerns over the decision, warning that a prolonged deployment could place additional pressure on military readiness, personnel and US defense capabilities in other regions.
The development comes days after the US Department of Defense was reportedly examining the possibility of reducing the American military presence in the Gulf following the end of the war in the Middle East.
