Washington (HRNW)- The US military’s Central Command has said that more than 40 ships carrying humanitarian aid have been allowed to pass through Iranian ports despite the ongoing US naval blockade.
According to CENTCOM, since the blockade was reimposed in mid-July, US forces have diverted 71 commercial vessels, disabled three vessels and boarded two others to enforce the restrictions. However, ships carrying humanitarian assistance were excluded from the operation and permitted to reach or transit Iranian ports.
The US says the blockade is aimed at restricting activities through Iranian ports that Washington considers supportive of Iran amid ongoing conflict and tensions. The measures have increased uncertainty for commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, both crucial routes for global energy supplies.
US Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth has said the naval blockade could continue indefinitely, raising concerns among shipping companies over increased security risks, costs and disruption to maritime routes.
The decision to allow humanitarian vessels to pass indicates that Washington is seeking to keep aid deliveries separate from its broader maritime restrictions against Iran.
