Karachi (HRNW) — On August 20, 1971, just 20-year-old Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas was preparing to depart for a routine training flight when his instructor, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman, boarded the aircraft and attempted to take control of the plane and fly it toward India.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Rashid Minhas made determined efforts to regain control of the aircraft. When he realized there was no other way to prevent the aircraft from crossing the border, he made the ultimate sacrifice and brought the aircraft down within Pakistani territory, preventing it from reaching what was then considered enemy territory.
Rashid Minhas was only 20 years old at the time of his death. In recognition of his exceptional courage, sacrifice, and devotion to Pakistan, he was posthumously awarded the country’s highest military honour, the Nishan-e-Haider.
His sacrifice continues to be remembered as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and devotion to duty, conveying a message that the dignity and sovereignty of the homeland must be protected at all costs.
