Rawalpindi to Get Second Anti-Narcotics Court Amid Record Case Backlog

RAWALPINDI (HRNW) – In response to an overwhelming surge in drug-related legal proceedings, authorities have finalized the decision to establish a new specialized court in Rawalpindi. The move aims to expedite the trial process and reduce the immense burden on the existing judicial infrastructure.

Establishment and Location

According to sources, a dedicated courtroom has already been selected within the Old District Courts (Zila Kachehri) Rawalpindi. This new judicial body will be officially designated as Special Court for Anti-Narcotics No. 2.

The Need for a New Court

The decision comes as the current anti-narcotics court faces an unprecedented caseload:

  • There are currently 653 record cases pending trial in the existing anti-narcotics court.

  • This high volume of cases has led to significant delays in hearings and the delivery of justice, necessitating a second branch to handle the division’s workload.

Key Appointments

The administrative framework for the new court has been formalized:

  • Judge: Senior District and Sessions Judge Raja Ghazanfar has been appointed to lead the new court.

  • Prosecutor: Zia Kayani has been designated as the prosecutor for this branch.

  • Staffing: The appointment of administrative and clerical staff is being finalized today to ensure the court is fully operational.

Operational Timeline

Officials have confirmed that the new court will become functional within the next two days of this week. It will specifically handle cases registered by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) across the entire Rawalpindi Division, significantly accelerating the legal fight against drug trafficking in the region.
