Government Implements New Fixed Charges on Electricity Bills for All Consumers

ISLAMABAD (HRNW): The government has officially introduced additional fixed monthly charges in electricity bills, with recovery beginning from the February billing cycle. According to officials, these charges have been imposed on both protected and non-protected categories of domestic consumers to meet revenue requirements.

For protected consumers, a monthly fixed charge of 200 rupees has been set for those using up to 100 units, while those consuming up to 200 units will be charged 300 rupees per month. The burden on non-protected consumers is slightly higher, with a 275-rupee charge for usage up to 100 units and 300 rupees for up to 200 units.

The scale of fixed charges increases progressively for higher consumption brackets among non-protected users:

  • Up to 300 units: 350 rupees

  • Up to 400 units: 400 rupees

  • Up to 500 units: 500 rupees

  • Up to 600 units: 675 rupees

Authorities stated that these measures are part of the ongoing structural adjustments in the energy sector. However, the move is expected to draw criticism from the public, already grappling with high inflation and rising utility costs.
