Supreme Court Sets 45-Day Deadline to Resolve Death and Life Imprisonment Cases

Islamabad (HRNW) — The Supreme Court of Pakistan has set a target to dispose of all cases involving the death sentence and life imprisonment within the next 45 days.

According to an official statement, the total backlog of criminal cases has decreased from 19,549 in October 2024 to 12,705. Between February 9 and 14, 2026 alone, the Supreme Court resolved 354 criminal cases involving death sentences and life imprisonment.

The statement noted that 131 new cases were filed during the same week, while the weekly disposal rate exceeded the number of new cases by approximately 270%.

The Supreme Court indicated that designated benches, reform groups, and judicial teams are actively working to achieve these targets. Chief Justice of Pakistan has also instructed that prison petitions concerning inmates under trial be systematically organized and expedited to ensure faster resolution.
