Dhaka (HRNW)– Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has been sentenced to five years in prison in a major corruption case. According to Bangladeshi media, her sister has been handed a seven-year sentence, while her niece, British MP Tulip Siddique, has been sentenced to two years in the same case.
Reports indicate that several other accused have also received 5.5-year prison terms. The case involved allegations of using political influence to illegally obtain plots in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave.
Sheikh Hasina has earlier faced severe penalties, including a death sentence and a 21-year prison term in separate cases.

Meanwhile, the inquiry commission report on the 2009 Bangladesh coup has also been released. The commission claims that Sheikh Hasina ordered the killing of military officers during the uprising. The coup resulted in 74 deaths, including several senior military officials. The report also alleges foreign involvement, with the commission head asserting that India played a role in destabilizing Bangladesh and weakening its military.
Bangladesh’s interim leader Mohammad Yunus welcomed the findings, stating that the commission has revealed the truth.
