Afghan Taliban Imposes Nationwide Ban on Protests Under New Law

Kabul (HRNW)- The Afghan Taliban has imposed a nationwide ban on all forms of protests and demonstrations under a new law approved by Supreme Leader Habtullah Akhundzada.

According to the International News Agency, the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice issued the law on Saturday. Article 50 explicitly prohibits protest demonstrations across Afghanistan, although the legislation does not specify the full scope of the ban or penalties for violations.

The new law also refers to Afghanistan’s police as “Sharda” and outlines the duties and powers of various police departments. It includes instructions requiring officers to protect the dignity and physical well-being of suspects and detainees, while prohibiting physical torture without legal justification or a court order.

The ban comes as public demonstrations have already been severely restricted since the Taliban returned to power. Recent crackdowns have further raised concerns over freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, including the reported dispersal of a protest by women in Herat in June.
