Tokyo (HRNW)- A Japanese father left his 7-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji for several hours after the child complained of exhaustion, while the father continued climbing toward the summit with his older son.
According to the BBC, the boy was left on a bench at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters amid fog and rain, with only a soft drink and a light snack. Police later found the child alone and exhausted after he had reportedly waited for around eight hours.
The boy’s 48-year-old father had instructed him to remain there until they returned and continued climbing to between the seventh and eighth stations, leaving the child approximately a three-hour walk away. Police located the father and reprimanded him, stressing that leaving the child alone in such dangerous conditions was unacceptable.
The family was hiking the Fujinomiya route. Mount Fuji stands at 3,776 meters and is Japan’s highest mountain and an active volcano. The mountain was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 and attracts around 200,000 climbers annually.
