ISLAMABAD (HRNW) — Twelve more historic and cultural sites from Pakistan have been added to the World Heritage Tentative List, increasing international attention on the country’s rich historical, cultural and natural heritage.
Among the newly included sites are Pharwala Fort, Rawat Fort and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarrab Khan in Punjab.
Cultural Sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Kalash Valley in Chitral, along with four other sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has also been included in the tentative list.
The Kalash Valley is known for its distinctive culture, traditions, language and way of life and represents an important part of Pakistan’s diverse cultural heritage. Its inclusion on the tentative list could contribute to greater international recognition and encourage stronger efforts for the protection of its cultural heritage.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage
Historic and cultural sites form an important part of a society’s identity, history and collective memory. Protecting these sites is essential not only for cultural preservation but also for ensuring that future generations can remain connected to their history and traditions.
Authorities should ensure that conservation and restoration efforts are carried out responsibly while protecting the rights, livelihoods and traditional way of life of local communities.
Human Rights and Cultural Identity
The protection of cultural heritage is closely connected to broader human rights, including the right of communities to preserve their culture, language, traditions and historical identity.
In areas such as the Kalash Valley, tourism and development should be managed in a way that respects the cultural and social rights of local communities, protects the environment and ensures meaningful participation of local residents in decisions affecting their heritage.
