Kabul (HRNW)- At least 42 children were injured in an explosion at an educational center in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area, according to reports.
The blast occurred on Monday evening in an area populated largely by members of the Hazara and Shia communities and which has previously experienced attacks targeting civilians and educational institutions.
According to a Kabul hospital, at least 35 injured students aged between 10 and 14 were brought for treatment. Hospital officials said the injured had suffered gunshot wounds, while at least three children required surgery.
The cause of the incident and those responsible were not immediately confirmed. The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan called for an investigation, while UN Special Representative Richard Bennett described the incident as a serious attack.
The European Union Mission in Afghanistan also condemned the targeting of children and educational facilities, calling such attacks unacceptable.
Dasht-e-Barchi has previously witnessed deadly attacks on educational institutions. In May 2021, at least 85 people were killed in an attack on a school, while a September 2022 suicide bombing at an educational center killed at least 19 people.
