Baghdad (HRNW) – Revelations about a secret Israeli military base allegedly operating inside Iraq during the recent US-Israeli war against Iran have triggered widespread concern and controversy in the region.
According to media reports, Iraqi authorities have not yet issued an official statement following disclosures by Western media regarding the alleged facility. Two Iraqi security officials told AFP that Israeli forces had used an old airfield in the Iraqi desert during the recent conflict with Iran. The claim was also referenced in a report published by The Wall Street Journal.
The reports suggest that after US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Israeli personnel were present in Iraq’s southwestern Najaf desert region, where a confrontation reportedly took place with Iraqi forces. In the clash, one Iraqi soldier was killed and two others were injured.
A security official stated that Israeli forces had established a temporary base at an abandoned airstrip in the Najaf desert. He added that although no troops are currently present, some equipment may have been left behind. The official further claimed that the operation was coordinated with the United States, though details regarding duration and objectives remain unclear.
The Israeli military has not responded to requests for comment from AFP.
