PTA Warns WhatsApp Users About Reissued Mobile Numbers

Islamabad (HRNW) — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned WhatsApp users to remain cautious about mobile numbers that are cancelled or deactivated and later reassigned to other subscribers.

According to the PTA, mobile numbers that are cancelled or remain inactive for an extended period may eventually be reissued to another user. If a WhatsApp account was previously linked to such a number, the reassignment could create privacy and account-security concerns for the former user.

The PTA has advised users to pay particular attention to WhatsApp accounts and other important online services linked to their mobile numbers. Users should promptly remove or update deactivated or changed numbers from their digital accounts.

Privacy and Digital Security Concerns

The reassignment of mobile numbers also raises concerns regarding digital privacy and the protection of personal information. Users are advised to ensure that their old numbers are removed from WhatsApp and other online platforms when they change or discontinue a mobile connection.

Updating recovery numbers, enabling available security features and ensuring that old numbers are no longer linked to important accounts can help reduce the risk of unauthorized access to personal information.

The PTA warning highlights the importance of updating mobile numbers across digital services whenever a number is changed, cancelled or becomes inactive.
