Chinese Businessman Guo Wengui Sentenced to 30 Years in U.S. Fraud and Money Laundering Case

New York (HRNW)- A U.S. federal court in Manhattan has sentenced self-exiled Chinese businessman Guo Wengui to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of large-scale financial fraud and money laundering.

While delivering the sentence, U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres said Guo Wengui defrauded more than 1,000 investors worldwide of hundreds of millions of dollars, using much of the money to finance an extravagant lifestyle.

The court also ordered the confiscation of approximately $889 million and directed that compensation be paid to the victims.

Guo Wengui was convicted by a federal jury in 2024 on multiple charges, including financial fraud, securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. He was arrested by the FBI at his luxury residence in Manhattan in 2023.

According to prosecutors, Guo raised substantial sums from investors between 2018 and 2023 by making false promises of high financial returns. The prosecution argued that the scheme caused severe financial losses and emotional distress to hundreds of families.

During sentencing, Judge Torres referred to statements submitted by victims, noting that many had lost their life savings and that the fraud had caused significant hardship and emotional trauma.

In court, Guo cited his health and said he had come to the United States to oppose the Chinese Communist Party, but he did not accept responsibility for the fraud allegations.

His defense lawyers argued that Guo had been targeted because of his political opposition to the Chinese government and claimed that a lengthy prison sentence could encourage further actions against critics of Beijing.

Guo Wengui left China in 2015 and settled in the United States, where he presented himself as a critic of the Chinese government and an advocate for democracy. He was also closely associated with American political strategist Steve Bannon, with whom he co-founded the organization known as the New Federal State of China.
