CPPA Seeks 82-Paisa Per Unit Electricity Price Increase, NEPRA to Hear Petition

Islamabad (HRNW)- The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an 82-paisa per unit increase in electricity tariffs for consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

According to the application, NEPRA is scheduled to hear the petition for the May monthly fuel cost adjustment tomorrow. If approved, the proposed increase could impose an additional financial burden of approximately Rs12 billion on electricity consumers.

The CPPA stated that 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated during May, with the average fuel cost recorded at Rs9.25 per unit, compared to a reference fuel cost of Rs8.43 per unit.

According to the submitted data, 33.27% of electricity generated during May came from hydropower, 11.66% from local coal, 13.54% from imported coal, 0.16% from furnace oil, and 8.31% from local natural gas, with the remaining electricity generated from other energy sources.

NEPRA will examine the CPPA’s submitted figures during the hearing before issuing its final decision on the proposed tariff adjustment.
