Federal Government Considers Weekly One-Day National Lockdown to Combat Energy Crisis

ISLAMABAD: (HRNW) The Federal Government of Pakistan is considering the implementation of a mandatory one-day weekly lockdown across the country, with a final decision expected later today, Wednesday, March 25, 2026. According to high-level sources, the proposal specifically suggests observing a total lockdown every Friday to significantly reduce national fuel consumption and electricity demand amidst the ongoing regional conflict and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The Government of Sindh has already assured the Federation of its full cooperation, confirming that it will strictly implement any federal directive regarding the shutdown. To ensure a smooth transition, provincial authorities in Sindh have initiated consultations with the trader community and chambers of commerce. In addition to the Friday lockdown, the federal cabinet is weighing a proposal to further restrict daily commercial activities by mandating a 08:00 PM closing time for all markets and shopping malls. An official notification detailing these austerity measures is anticipated following the Prime Minister’s scheduled briefing this evening, which aims to stabilize the national economy against skyrocketing global energy prices.
