New Delhi (HRNW), August 12, 2026: The captain of an Air India flight from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi has reportedly tested positive for marijuana in a second drug test, according to Indian media reports.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 4, 2026, when the aircraft suddenly lost approximately 300 feet in altitude during the flight. At least 20 passengers and four crew members were reportedly injured.
There were 137 passengers and eight crew members on board the flight. According to reports, the captain was not in his seat when the sudden drop occurred, and the aircraft was being controlled by the first officer at the time.
Indian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Both pilots have reportedly been removed from flying duties pending the investigation, while the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have cautioned against drawing final conclusions before the investigation is completed. A positive drug test alone does not establish that the pilot was impaired while operating the aircraft.
