Lahore (HRNW) — The mysterious deaths of two women while reportedly in police custody at Township Police Station, Lahore, have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of detainees, human rights and police accountability.
Police have reportedly maintained that the women died after their health deteriorated. However, the families have rejected this position and alleged that the deaths were not natural but resulted from alleged physical violence.
According to the families, the women allegedly had marks of physical injuries on their bodies, while there were also signs of bleeding from their noses.
The families have further alleged that they were not informed promptly about the deaths and that they were pressured to proceed with the burials late at night in the presence of a heavy police contingent.
The incident raises serious questions about the protection of human life in police custody, transparency in investigations and accountability within law-enforcement institutions.
If the police version is correct, post-mortem examinations, forensic evidence and an impartial investigation should establish the actual cause of death. If the allegations made by the families are substantiated, those responsible must face legal action.
Every person in state custody has the fundamental right to life, dignity and protection from torture or ill-treatment. Being poor or vulnerable is not a crime, and the purpose of a police uniform is to provide protection—not fear.
