ISLAMABAD (HRNW) – During a Supreme Court hearing regarding a bail application on medical grounds for murder convict Dilawar Khan, Justice Aqeel Abbasi expressed strong dissatisfaction over the state of healthcare within prisons.
Responding to the defense counsel’s argument that jail authorities only provide basic over-the-counter medication and are unequipped to handle cardiac conditions, Justice Abbasi remarked:
“In jail, you don’t even have treatment for an eye; how will you treat a heart?”
Court Directives
Recognizing the severity of the convict’s heart condition and the reported lack of specialized care in the prison system, the Supreme Court issued the following orders:
-
Medical Board Formation: The court ordered the constitution of a medical board comprising specialist doctors from Peshawar Cardiology.
-
Submission of Report: The board has been directed to conduct a thorough examination of the accused and submit a comprehensive report by March 9.
The remarks highlight a growing judicial concern regarding the limited medical facilities available to inmates suffering from life-threatening illnesses within Pakistan’s correctional facilities.
