Karachi (HRNW): The Sindh High Court heard a contempt of court petition alleging non-compliance with its previous orders regarding the removal of encroachments in Shah Faisal Colony.
The petition names the Mayor of Karachi, the Municipal Commissioner of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), and the Director of Anti-Encroachment, alleging failure to implement the court’s directives.
During the hearing, the court summoned the Municipal Commissioner, KMC, and the Director of Anti-Encroachment to appear in person and adjourned further proceedings until September 7.
Counsel for the petitioner, Advocate Usman Farooq, informed the court that in 2016, the Sindh High Court had ordered the removal of encroachments from Shah Faisal Colony. He stated that KMC’s counsel had assured the court that a regular monitoring mechanism would be established to prevent the re-emergence of illegal structures.
According to the petitioner, no effective monitoring system was put in place, allowing previously removed encroachments to return.
The petition further argues that the Mayor of Karachi, as head of the KMC, and the Municipal Commissioner, as its chief administrative officer, are responsible for ensuring compliance with the court’s orders. It requests contempt proceedings against the officials for the alleged non-compliance.
