LAHORE (HRNW): The Punjab government is facing a wave of intense criticism from political and social circles following the acquisition of a luxury Gulfstream G500 aircraft for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Critics and opposition leaders, including members of the PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami, have pointed out that the estimated cost of PKR 11.7 billion (approximately $42 million) could have been utilized to address the province’s dire health and education crises. Public discourse has highlighted that this amount alone could have funded the establishment of nearly 500 basic health units or clinics in neglected rural areas, or facilitated the construction of over 1,000 primary schools or 6,000 classrooms in regions currently suffering from a severe shortage of educational infrastructure.
The controversy is further fueled by the timing of the purchase, as a large portion of the population struggles with record inflation, unemployment, and a surge in child malnutrition. Opposition figures have drawn sharp comparisons between the cost of this single 19-seater VIP jet and the recent privatization of the national carrier, PIA, which was reportedly sold for roughly the same amount (Rs 10 billion). While the provincial administration initially defended the move by claiming the jet is part of a newly proposed “Air Punjab” airline project, aviation experts have dismissed the feasibility of using a high-end executive business jet for commercial airline operations, calling the justification “economically unviable.”
Despite government officials arguing that the new aircraft was necessary to replace an aging fleet and ensure safety, the expenditure is being termed a symbol of “elite extravagance” that remains detached from the economic realities of the common man. Public stakeholders are demanding that the provincial resources be redirected toward human development indices, particularly in South Punjab and other marginalized districts, where basic life-saving medical facilities remain out of reach for thousands of citizens.
