Islamabad (HRNW): Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a mediator in a landmark diplomatic development involving the United States and Iran.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the MoU carries the signatures of US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while Pakistan has formally endorsed it as a third-party facilitator.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced what he called a major diplomatic success, stating that electronic signatures had been completed between Washington and Tehran. He said the agreement reflects both sides’ commitment to resolving disputes through diplomatic means, and that it has come into immediate effect.
Under the reported framework, Iran would initially reopen the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic, while the United States would lift maritime restrictions.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan, in coordination with Qatar as a co-mediator, will host a formal ceremony in Switzerland on 19 June 2026 to mark the agreement, where technical-level talks between the two countries are also expected to begin.
He praised US leadership, including President Donald Trump and members of his negotiating team, as well as Iran’s leadership and diplomatic delegation, for their roles in reaching the understanding.
Pakistan’s military leadership was also acknowledged for its behind-the-scenes diplomatic contribution, according to the statement.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei confirmed that both presidents signed the document electronically, stating that it has now entered into force.
He added that provisions reportedly include phased easing of sanctions, arrangements related to maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on military escalation for a defined period, and discussions on Iran’s nuclear program in future technical negotiations.
US media outlets also reported the release of a video showing President Trump signing the agreement, along with the publication of the official document titled the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
