Ottawa (HRNW)- Retired Canadian military officer Christopher Coates has stated that a lasting peace in Ukraine will be difficult to achieve under the current circumstances, arguing that either a Ukrainian victory or a change in Russia’s leadership would be required for a durable settlement.
According to reports, Christopher Coates, the former commander of Canada’s Joint Operations Command, made the remarks following a visit to Ukraine, where he traveled in his capacity as Director of Foreign Policy at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
Speaking at a forum after his return, Coates expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to continue resisting Russian forces. However, he noted that Russia is engaged in a different type of conflict and possesses advantages that make the situation particularly challenging for Ukraine.
He said that while he believes in Ukraine’s resilience and determination, he is also aware of the significant difficulties facing the country, including limited resources and the broader challenges of sustaining a prolonged conflict.
Coates emphasized that Ukraine continues to operate under constraints, whereas Russia faces comparatively fewer obstacles in maintaining its military campaign.
His comments come as the war in Ukraine remains a major international security issue, with ongoing debates among policymakers and military analysts regarding possible paths toward a lasting peace agreement.
