Iran Warns of “New Power Balance” in Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising US-Iran Tensions

Tehran (HRNW)- Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has stated that tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are escalating due to the policies of the United States and its allies, and warned that a “new balance of power” is emerging in the region. In a statement shared on social media, he alleged that the US and its partners have violated ceasefire understandings and disrupted shipping and energy routes in the strategically vital waterway. He added that Iran is fully aware of the situation and that the current developments will not be acceptable to Tehran.

Qalibaf further claimed that a new regional equilibrium is taking shape in the Strait of Hormuz, with potential global implications, while indicating that Iran has not yet deployed its full strategic response. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the United States has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and shipping routes since April 13, further intensifying regional tensions.

US President Donald Trump has also announced a naval initiative called “Project Freedom”, aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels. Under the plan, the US Navy would escort merchant shipping, a move that has drawn strong opposition from Iran.

Experts warn that the Strait of Hormuz—through which a significant portion of global oil supply passes—has become a critical flashpoint, with ongoing tensions posing serious risks to global energy security and the international economy.
