Seoul (HRNW)- At least 16 people have died and more than 2,000 people have fallen ill due to heat-related illnesses as a record-breaking heatwave continues to grip South Korea, with temperatures reaching 42.5°C in the southern city of Yangsan, officials said.
Authorities have issued a heatwave alert for the capital, Seoul, for the first time as extreme temperatures continue to affect large parts of the country.
President Lee Jae-myung has directed relevant authorities to intensify relief efforts to protect vulnerable communities and maintain close monitoring of the country’s power system to prevent disruptions during the ongoing heatwave.
According to climate experts, the extreme weather is being driven by persistent high-pressure systems and unusual atmospheric conditions linked to climate change.
