Pentagon Seeks Additional $80 Billion from Congress for War Costs and Military Readiness

WASHINGTON (HRNW)- The United States Department of Defense (Pentagon) has informed members of Congress that it requires approximately $80 billion in additional funding to cover war-related expenses and maintain military readiness.

According to media reports citing a Wall Street Journal report later referenced by Reuters, Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg recently told lawmakers that additional financial resources are needed to meet the costs associated with military operations, troop deployments, replenishment of weapons and ammunition stocks, and other defense-related expenditures.

Sources familiar with the matter said that inventories of several advanced weapons systems and missile stockpiles have declined significantly, making large-scale replenishment necessary. US defense officials reportedly believe that restoring these stocks is essential to maintaining military preparedness and the country’s global defense capabilities.

Reports indicate that US military expenditures have risen sharply since the beginning of the conflict involving Iran. Initial Pentagon estimates in April reportedly placed the cost of military operations at around $25 billion, but subsequent assessments have suggested a substantial increase in overall expenses.

The funding request has also sparked debate within Congress. Some lawmakers have argued that greater clarity is needed regarding the objectives, strategy, and legal basis of military operations before approving such a large allocation. Others support the request, emphasizing the importance of national security and military readiness.

The proposed funding package is expected to be the subject of further discussions and scrutiny in Congress in the coming weeks.
