Lahore (HRNW)- The Punjab government has proposed a significant reduction in its development budget for the financial year 2026-27, allocating Rs 752 billion compared to Rs 1.24 trillion approved in the previous fiscal year, a decrease of Rs 488 billion.
According to budget documents, the Punjab government’s budget for the next financial year is set to be presented today. A total of 3,560 projects have been proposed under the Annual Development Program (ADP), compared to 5,755 projects in the previous year.
Out of the proposed Rs 752 billion development budget, Rs 493.25 billion has been earmarked for ongoing development schemes, while Rs 258.75 billion has been allocated for new projects. The government plans to allocate Rs 353.84 billion in local funding and Rs 139.40 billion in foreign funding for 3,117 ongoing schemes. For 420 new projects, Rs 254 billion in local funding and Rs 4.68 billion in foreign funding have been proposed.
The number of new projects has been reduced substantially from 1,662 last year to 420 this year, while the number of ongoing projects has increased from 1,442 to 3,117, indicating a greater focus on completing existing schemes.
Among major allocations, Rs 20 billion has been proposed for the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital in Lahore. The establishment of Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan is also included, with a total project cost of Rs 15 billion and an allocation of Rs 800 million for the upcoming fiscal year.
The development program proposes Rs 15.069 billion for the Chief Minister Punjab Laptop Program, Rs 2.47 billion for the Kisan Card Program, Rs 6.75 billion for Kisan Card Phase-II, Rs 1 billion for Livestock Card Phase-II, and Rs 300 million for the Chief Minister Parwaz Card for International Placement Program.
In the education sector, Rs 9.5 billion has been proposed for the establishment of Mian Nawaz Sharif Engineering and Technology University in Kasur, with Rs 200 million allocated for the next fiscal year. Other allocations include Rs 26.1 million for Shahbaz Sharif Sports Complex Kasur, Rs 20 million for Shahbaz Sharif Sports Gymnasium Gujranwala, and Rs 15 million for Nawaz Sharif Sports Ground Sialkot.
In the health sector, a Rs 169 billion Nawaz Sharif Medical District project has been proposed for Lahore, with Rs 2 billion allocated for the next fiscal year. Additionally, Rs 610 million has been proposed for Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics and Rs 59 million for the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif Autonomous Program.
Other proposed projects include Maryam Nawaz Sharif Ladies Park City Pasrur, Maryam Nawaz Sharif Family Park Dinga in Gujrat, water supply and filtration facilities at Nawaz Sharif Stadium Nankana Sahib, and road infrastructure projects in Sialkot.
The government has also proposed the establishment of Maryam Nawaz Sports City Lahore, a Rs 50 billion project for which Rs 110 million has been allocated in the upcoming fiscal year. Furthermore, Maryam Nawaz Autism Schools are planned at every divisional level, with the project estimated to cost Rs 4.5 billion and an allocation of Rs 1.9 billion proposed for 2026-27.
