Billions Allocated but Karachi Smothers in Garbage: Severe Concerns Over SSWMB’s Failure in Sluggish Cleanliness Campaign

Karachi (HRNW): Severe public concerns have erupted over the deteriorating waste management and sanitization infrastructure in Karachi, where massive piles of garbage continue to litter the metropolis despite the allocation of multi-billion rupee budgets.

According to structural details, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) is directly responsible for the collection, lifting, and scientific disposal of solid waste across three major districts of Karachi: District South, District East, and District Malir. An enormous budget of approximately Rs. 23 billion has been allocated to the board for these specific operational boundaries.

Ground Realities vs. Institutional Spending

Despite these massive financial resources, the ground reality across the designated districts remains dismal. Instead of any visible civic improvement, the sanitary situation has deteriorated drastically:

  • Accumulated Dumps: Main thoroughfares, residential streets, and commercial areas have transformed into open garbage dumps, causing severe logistical hardships for residents.

  • Health Hazards: Citizens lament that the abysmal cleanliness arrangements are severely disrupting daily life, while the resulting foul stench has drastically increased the risk of airborne diseases and viral epidemics.

Demands for Structural Accountability

Public circles and local communities have raised a strong voice demanding immediate accountability and a complete overhaul of the current solid waste operational model. They have urged higher authorities to make the trash collection mechanism effective, logistically efficient, and financially transparent so that the taxpayers of Karachi can be provided with a clean, pollution-free living environment.
