Gilgit (HRNW)- As the Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2026 draw near, political activity has reached its peak, with major parties and candidates intensifying their campaigns and election strategies ahead of polling day.
The three constituencies of Gilgit have emerged as key battlegrounds, where closely contested races are expected among candidates from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), PTI-backed independents and other political groups.
In Gilgit Constituency-I, a strong contest is expected between PPP’s Amjad Hussain Advocate and PML-N’s Muhammad Shafiquddin, while MWM’s Muhammad Ilyas Siddiqui and IPP’s Sultan Raees are also actively competing.
In Gilgit Constituency-II, PML-N provincial president Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman is expected to face PPP’s Jamil Ahmed, with IPP’s Fatehullah Khan and PTI-backed independent candidate Atiq Pirzada also in the race.
Meanwhile, Gilgit Constituency-III is likely to witness a close contest between PML-N’s Dr. Muhammad Iqbal and PPP’s Aftab Haider. Captain (Retd.) Muhammad Shafi of Uthman Pakistan Party and independent candidate Sohail Abbas, supported by PTI and MWM, are also seeking electoral success.
Overall, political parties and candidates are actively engaged in campaigning and finalizing strategies ahead of the decisive electoral stage.
On the administrative side, Gilgit-Baltistan Caretaker Information Minister Ghulam Abbas has stated that all arrangements have been finalized for transparent and peaceful elections scheduled for June 7 across the region’s 24 constituencies. He said that necessary funds, security measures and logistical support have been provided to the Election Commission.
According to the caretaker minister, additional security personnel from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad Police and other agencies have been deployed to ensure a secure and peaceful voting environment.
