LAHORE (HRNW): The Government of Punjab has prepared a comprehensive plan to significantly reduce traffic violation fines across the province, providing substantial relief to commuters. The Chief Minister of Punjab has approved the summary moved by the DIG Traffic Punjab, which will now be presented to the Punjab Assembly for final legislative approval.
Revised Fine Structure:
According to the approved summary, the new fine rates for various vehicle categories are as follows:
-
Motorcycles: The fine has been reduced from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 1,000.
-
Rickshaws: Fines have been slashed from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 1,000, while serious violations will now incur a Rs. 2,000 penalty.
-
Cars and Jeeps: The penalty has been decreased from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 3,000.
-
Luxury Vehicles (2,000cc and above): Fines previously set at Rs. 20,000 have been cut to Rs. 10,000. The range for these vehicles will now stay between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 10,000.
-
Public Transport (Mazda, Coasters, Vans): Penalties have been reduced from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 7,000.
-
Heavy Vehicles (Trucks and Buses): The fine has been lowered from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 10,000.
Key Policy Highlights:
The summary notes that while many fines have seen a reduction of up to Rs. 10,000, the penalties for over-speeding for motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars remain unchanged to ensure public safety on highways and city roads. Other general fines for both light and heavy vehicles have also been scaled down to make them more manageable for the general public.
The initiative aims to balance the enforcement of law with the economic realities of the citizens, though authorities emphasize that traffic discipline must still be strictly maintained.
