End of an Era: WAPDA Officers Stripped of Free Electricity Benefits for the First Time in History

ISLAMABAD (HRNW): In a historic move, the federal government has officially abolished the decades-old privilege of free electricity provided to officers and employees of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

Policy Change for High-Ranking Officials:

According to official sources, the facility has been withdrawn for officers ranging from Grade 17 to Grade 22. This marks the first time in the organization’s history that such a widespread entitlement has been formally terminated. Under the new directive, these high-ranking officials will now be required to pay their electricity bills just like ordinary consumers.

Reasons for the Decision:

The decision comes amid a severe national energy crisis and mounting financial pressure on the power sector. Authorities stated that the primary objectives of this measure are:

  • Fiscal Responsibility: Reducing unnecessary institutional expenditures and easing the financial burden on the national exchequer.

  • Institutional Equity: Promoting a culture of equality and transparency within state institutions by ensuring that public servants share the economic realities faced by the general public.

  • Resource Optimization: Encouraging more responsible energy consumption among government officials.

Reactions and Context:

For decades, free electricity was considered a standard perk of WAPDA employment, often drawing criticism from the public during periods of high tariffs and load-shedding. While the move has been widely lauded as a step toward reform, some circles within the power sector have expressed reservations regarding the impact on employee benefits.

This landmark decision reflects a broader shift in government policy aimed at streamlining state-owned enterprises and addressing the systemic challenges of Pakistan’s energy landscape.
