Islamabad (HRNW)- The government of Pakistan has decided to permanently shut down the firewall project installed to control social media due to its failure to deliver the desired results. This decision has been taken to improve the performance of the internet network ahead of the expected auction of 5G spectrum.
According to official sources, the firewall project, which was launched in 2024, faced technical issues, due to which the internet speed was affected and users faced severe difficulties. The firewall also harmed the digital economy, especially freelancers and online business people, while there are reports of an overall economic loss of billions of rupees.
Sources say that it was necessary to improve the network and restore investor confidence before the auction of 5G spectrum, and in this context, it was decided to end the firewall project. According to officials, an alternative strategy will be adopted to improve the quality of internet service in the future and promote the digital sector.
