Kyiv (HRNW)- Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and surrounding areas, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens, according to officials.
According to the foreign news agency AFP, several ballistic missiles and drones struck residential neighborhoods, warehouses, and other civilian facilities during the attack, triggering fires and causing widespread destruction across multiple locations.
According to the Kyiv Military Administration, one woman was killed in the capital while at least 24 people were injured. The strikes sparked fires in four districts of the city and damaged several residential buildings.
Russian attacks in areas surrounding Kyiv also killed 14 more people and injured over 20 others. Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, described it as one of the most devastating attacks in recent months.
Ukrainian officials accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, stating that Moscow would one day be held accountable for such attacks.
The latest strikes come amid a significant escalation in long-range missile and drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine. According to reports, Russia substantially increased the number of missiles launched against Ukraine during July.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities claimed that Ukraine launched drone attacks targeting Moscow and other regions. The Mayor of Moscow said Russian air defense systems intercepted at least 10 Ukrainian drones approaching the capital, while authorities in the Tula region reported that 107 drones had been shot down.
Ukraine also accused Russia of using a drone to pursue a civilian in the city of Kherson, describing the incident as an “organized hunt” against civilians.
The United Nations human rights monitoring mission has previously warned that civilian casualties in Ukraine have reached their highest levels since the war began in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once again called on Western allies to provide additional Patriot air defense systems and ballistic missile interceptors to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to protect civilians from Russian attacks.
